Ethics for Children Teachers (ages 6-‐8 and 9-‐12)
The Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture (BSEC) seeks part-‐time experienced, progressive educators to teach the 6-‐8 and 9-‐12 age groups of our Ethics for Children 2018-‐2019 program.
Ethics for Children is a multi-‐age humanist education program addressing the social – emotional, developmental and ethical needs and questions of young people. The Ethics for Children program provides fun, creative and play based curricula, activities, and tools in an effort to support our young people as they pass through the stages of childhood, come to understand the nature and value of community, learn to make ethically conscious decisions, explore world religions, learn about ethical heroes and ground their own life journey. The chosen candidate will teach a class for either ages 6-‐8 or 9-‐12 on Sunday mornings from 11 am to 12:30 pm most Sundays between Sept and June (we do not meet during public school breaks). There are approximately 30 classes/year. You can view this year’s Ethics for Children calendar.
Teachers must be on site from 10:30-‐1 on Sundays and attend one Ethical Education Committee meeting each month from 1-‐2 pm (on site after classes).
Additional responsibilities will include:
• Providing a description of each week’s class for parent outreach
• A fall and spring syllabus as well as preparing weekly lesson plans
Skills & Experience:
• Strong teacher, communicator and motivator.
• B.A. in education or humanist studies preferred but not required and a minimum of 3 years experience teaching elementary school aged students in school or community programs.
• Interest in and/or knowledge of ethics, social justice, Ethical Culture, Humanism, world religions, environmental issues, social-emotional learning, human rights education and conflict resolution is a plus.
• Experience in creating student centered, play-based lesson plans.
• Familiarity with inclusion programs where special needs children are integrated within the program is an asset.

• Compensation is $150 a week ($6000 annually). This includes compensation for prep work/orientation starting in mid-‐August.
– 2 meeting will be scheduled during the summer. Additional compensation might be available for Summer meetings.
