Juneteenth – James Weldon and Rosamund Johnson: Social Justice through Song

Join us in a celebration of Juneteenth with Professor Moses Phillips, as he talks about American writer and civil rights activist James Weldon and American musician Rosamund Johnson.

Professor Moses Phillips

Recently named Chairman of the Department of Mass Communications, Creative & Performing Arts and Speech, Moses Bernard Phillips is an Assistant Professor in ethnomusicology, music theory, and cultural studies at Medgar Evers College, CUNY. From 1999 to 2004 he was Director of the Music Department at the Harlem School of the Arts. Professor Phillips has long and distinguished history as a flutist with the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra, Texas Opera Theater, and on Broadway he played solo flute in Les Miserable, Miss Saigon, and Phantom of the Opera. As a pedagogue, he has taught advanced flute studies in the French flute technique. He won the piccolo and third flute position with the Houston Ballet Orchestra but was prevented from assuming that chair as a result of hegemony. He studied in the studio of Albert Tipton and can be heard on the Kulture, BMG, and Really Useful labels. He was Martin Luther King-Cesar Chavez-Rosa Parks Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan.
