September 28 & 29 - Old-Time/Bluegrass Jamboree

The Good Coffeehouse kicks off the season with the Fourth Annual Brooklyn Old Time and Bluegrass Jamboree. This magical festival attracts musicians and fans from across the northeast, for two days of some of the best traditional American music you can find anywhere.

Friday night at 8pm is a concert by Coffeehouse favorites James Reams and the Barnstormers, and an exhilarating evening of foot-stompin', heart-pumpin' bluegrass music.

Saturday Afternoon and Evening is a series of workshops, jams, and performances, with children's activities and a healthy helping of BBQ & vittles, starting at noon and going on until after 10pm.

  • 6:15-10:15 - Concert by various old-time and bluegrass performers

October 19 - Dzieci: Unleashed and Out of Control
The goofy buffoons of theatre group Dzieci invite one and all to an interactive family event of song, movement, and celebration, with a veritable cornucopia of ridiculous antics and stunts that are certain to amuse, entertain, and lift your spirits.
 
October 26 - Sam Zygmuntowicz and JAYBIRD!
An evening of traditional and original tunes by the superb fiddler and his talented band.
 
November 2 - Lisa Gutkin & Friends
A Celtic and contemporary violinist and her compadres.
 
November 9 - Texas Leroy and Le Nozze di Carlo
A finger-pickin' guitar wizard with an amazing roots repertoire; plus an accordion/bass/violin/mandolin ensemble playing original classic and Italian favorites.
 
November 16 - Third Fridays with the Park Slope Food Coop
Join the performers from the Food Coop for another great evening.

January 11 - Bluegrass Music
The bluegrass musical partnership Orrin Star Duo (with Russell Scholl) offers "brother harmony" style singing and fancy guitar picking.
 
January 18 - Third Fridays with the Park Slope Food Coop
Elly Wininger, with original songs plus some of her favorites by other songwriters, performed acoustically; Lois Isaksen with folk music.
 
January 25 - Night of Magic
A special evening of classic entertainment, with Richard Cohen and an array of New York's greatest magicians.

Multi-instrumentalist Barry Kornhauser performs with recent musical collaborators; Margaret Morrison's birthday tap-dance extravaganza.
 
February 8 - Schanzer and Speach
Bernadette Speach and Jeffrey Schanzer perform piano and guitar new-jazz music, with guests Holland Hopson and John Jannone.
 
February 15 - Third Fridays with the Park Slope Food Coop
An evening of jazz with the Mike Amendola Group and the Rose Bartu Quartet.
 
February 22 - Ken Perlman
World-renowned banjo wizardry.
 
March 1
K.J. Denhert, soulful singer-songwriter, and Jen Chapin, singer-songwriter carrying on the tradition of her father Harry Chapin.
 
March 8 - Kate & Lou
The husband-and-wife duo Kate and Lou Giampetruzzi team up with friends for a rousing evening of American roots music.
 
March 15 - Third Fridays with the Park Slope Food Coop
Zen Music, Zen Words, a program of Japanese shakuhachi music and Zen koans.

Crossroads Music Awards finalists Ellsworth & Hicks, guitar ace Jon Kolleeny, and singer-songwriter Pat Wictor.

April 5
Gifted singer-songwriter Jane Barnett writes songs of autonomy, community, romantic love, and the journey through modern time. The Music Paper wrote: "Her voice is unforgettable...Her hot, hip, sophisticated compositions sometimes smolder, sometimes burn, but at all times tug at the deep nerves."; also The Garden Verge (Tammy Greenstein and Doris Muramatsu), which offers intelligent songs and daring vocal harmonies. Along with Boston Music Award winner Nate Borofsky, they form a dynamic and exciting "new-folk" ensemble.
 
April 12 - The Love Handles
The Love Handles are six musicians on a mission. The two founding members met as students in the 60s and made a commitment to keep their favorite music alive. The eclectic influences in their music include rock, blues, and folk. The Love Handles are Marty Silberman, Sam Himmelstein, Jeff Nathan, Brian Mich, Rob Schlossberg, and David Hershey-Webb.
 
April 19 - Third Fridays with the Park Slope Food Coop
Jazz with Indian and Middle Eastern influences by The Andy Middleton Group. Also the Classic Brazilian acoustic music of The Choro Ensemble, featuring BSEC member Christiane Siebert.
 
April 26
Chris Seymour and Friends play a mix of ballads, gospel and other traditional songs; Squeezology, featuring concertina player Jody Kruskal, Paul Friedman on fiddle, Marnen Labow-Koser on piano and Bob Jones on guitar, plays music ranging from traditional old-time fiddle tunes to Texas swing to Love Potion #9.
 
May 3 - Anybody's Guess
Anybody's Guess features guitars, bass, djembe, mandolin, and lots of voices belonging to Dave Roche, Alex MacDonald, David Kumin, Maggie Roche, Marlon Cherry, Mary Mullally, and Felix McTeigue. A great group of songwriters and musicians, guaranteed to present an evening of wonderful music.
 
May 10 - James Reams & The Barnstormers
James Reams & The Barnstormers bring their "bluegrass music with an old-time music edge" for a night of foot-stompin', heart-pumpin' traditional music. Their recent CD, Barnstormin', was named by NYC's WKCR-FM as one of the top 12 bluegrass CDs of 2001. Catch them before they head off for a summer on the bluegrass festival circuit.
 
May 17 - Third Fridays with the Park Slope Food Coop
Tomas Rodriguez and Friends gather to play selections from Tomas' forthcoming CD, Dialogo; also XODO, combining sultry, lilting vocals with the driving rhythms of Brazil.
 
June 7 - The Kennedys
This husband-and-wife singing duo brings their edgy folk-flavored music to Brooklyn for the first time. Now living in Reston, Virginia, they first met in the exciting Austin, Texas, music scene, sharing an interest in original rockers such as Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison and the Everly Brothers. The Kennedys' style is heavily influenced by the folk-rock era, and in particular, The Byrds. Welcome them to their Good Coffeehouse – and Brooklyn – debut.
 
June 14 - Oscar Brand
Folk-music legend Oscar Brand brings his comprehensive repertoire to our stage. Host of the weekly, award-winning Folk-song Festival radio program on New York Public Radio – the oldest continuous radio show in history – Oscar Brand is a folk-music legend: a singer and musician, as well as an encyclopedia of folk songs, a music historian and a raconteur.
 
June 21 - Third Fridays with the Park Slope Food Coop
Jenny Hill & Liquid Horn is a funky mixture of jazz, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian grooves. Opening for them will be blues/jazz composer/musician Dayna Kurtz in her Good Coffeehouse debut.
 
June 28 - Season Finale
The always-inspiring Brooklyn Women's Chorus under the direction of Bev Grant.
