The Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture (BSEC) seeks a part time experienced, progressive educator to head up their Children’s Sunday Assembly (CSA). Two moral precepts “Deed before Creed” and “Bringing out the best in others to bring out the best in ourselves” are at the heart of our community and our Sunday school program. The CSA is a multi-age humanist education program addressing the social-emotional, developmental and ethical needs and questions of young people. The CSA provides fun, creative and challenging curricula, activities, and tools in an effort to support our young people as they pass through the stages of childhood, come to understand the nature and value of community, learn to make ethically conscious decisions, explore world religions, learn about ethical heroes and ground their own life journey.

On Sunday, May 12 at 11am, the women-founded peace group CODEPINK received the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture’s Peace Site Award for its anti-drone campaign.
CODEPINK is a women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement working to end U.S. funded wars and occupations, to challenge militarism globally, and to redirect public resources into health care, education, green jobs and other life-affirming activities. The group launched in November 2002 with a White House vigil to protest the war drums beating for a US invasion of Iraq.
Jodie Evans, the filmmaker and activist who is co-founder of CODEPINK,accepted the award and gave a talk about this pressing issue during a special Sunday morning platform in the Society’s meeting room on Prospect Park West.

It is the absence of those sublime emotions which, wherever they arise, do not fail to exalt and consecrate existence.”

His hope was that Ethical Societies would inspire people to a deep purposefulness, an expansive vision of humanity and a passion for realizing each person’s worth and dignity. This would lead us toward a richly humane and just society. How well does Adler’s concern reflect our concerns today?
