SUMMARY:150 Years of Disability Activism
DESCRIPTION:with Warren Shaw.\nFrom street protests to the courtrooms, New York City has been a center of disability activism for the past 150 years, and many battles are still raging. Disability historian Warren Shaw will present an overview of activism from 1860 through to today, including the first disability activists and organizations in the 19th and early 20th Centuries, and the evolution of activism through the Depression and during and after World War Two. He will trace the emergence of the modern disability rights movement in the 1960s, and the growth and consolidation of the movement in the Seventies and beyond, to the present.\n\nLive music by DuPree and Barry Kornhauser.\nRSVP below. We hope to see you in person, but those who RSVP will also receive the Zoom link.\nhttps://forms.gle/PX3nEcfxaDoxDNXv5 ( https://forms.gle/PX3nEcfxaDoxDNXv5 )\nWarren Shaw is a Vice President of the 504 Democratic Club, a longtime member of the Board of Directors of the Brooklyn Center for Independence of the Disabled, a writer, professor, attorney, and historian of the New York City disability rights movement. Warren curated the first-ever museum exhibit on the movement at the Brooklyn Historical Society, and writes a monthly column on disability history for Able News, the newspaper of record for the disability community the Tristate area. Warren’s website, www.DisabilityHistoryNYC.com , is a unique resource for information about disability history and activism in the City of New York, from 1860 to the present. Warren’s parents, Mollie and Julius Shaw, helped pioneer the disability rights movement in the early 1960s, and engineered the establishment of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities. Warren has a book in the works, for which he is now seeking literary representation.\n \n
