Homeschoolers' Lessons for Crisis Schooling

Whether you are starting your homeschooling path, worried about remote schooling or what school will look like in the fall, or just trying to learn about your options during this difficult time in our lives, join us with a panel of experienced homeschoolers and learn more about what homeschooling really is, how it differs from crisis schooling, and how different people have found solutions to educate their kids in ways that best worked for their own families and lifestyles.

Taty Sena is a homeschooling mom to a thoughtful 8-year-old powergirl, the director of education for BSEC’s Ethics for Children program (https://bsec.org/efc/ ) and has been a teacher, tutor and curriculum consultant for over 20 years for schooled and homeschooled kids ages 3-17. Taty has worked for a variety of different organizations, including Greenpeace, NYPIRG and The New York International Fringe Festival. She has also created projects with organizations all over the world to support educational and health projects in Uganda, Brazil, Tibet and Afghanistan, as well as free tutoring groups for low income and refugee communities in NYC. http://momanddadcentral.com/

Niurka Maldonado is a certified Conscious Parenting coach through the Jai Institute for Parenting, homeschooling mom to 2 girls and a supporter of women taking ownership of their talents. She is also a former biochemist and medical writer. https://connectedkindred.com/

Angel Thompson is an artist, educator, writer and mother based in Brooklyn, NY. She has over 10 years of teaching experience, working with families and children of all ages throughout NYC. As an educator she is passionate about instilling her students with the skills they need to share their inherent creativity and voice. She is the coauthor of the book Quick and Creative Art Projects For Creative Therapists With (Very) Limited Budgets. Angel has two adult children and a 10yr old. Her youngest has been homeschooled throughout. Denise Clay, LCSW is a homeschooling mom to two children, as well as a practicing psychotherapist with a background in attachment-based psychology, neuroscience, interpersonal neurobiology and trauma. She is a speaker and educator, and presents to a broad range of groups in NYC. Lucy’s Children is a community effort to examine the fiction of Race in order to address the fact of Racism. Our plan is to provide information, opportunities, and events that can help us come together as a society to end racism. We will meet Fridays from 4:00 to 6:30 PM at BSEC to plan our efforts, to share resources and related experiences.

All members of BSEC and their personal guests are welcome at the learning sessions of Lucy’s Children. Please contact one of the members for information on how to join the group.

Lucy was discovered in 1974 by paleontologists in Ethiopia. At that time she was the earliest known ancestor of the human species. This is why we call our group Lucy’s children.
