The Elusive Art of Wholeness
Apr 21 @ 11:00 am

While wholeness is not complete without human connections, there are also many ways in which we can work on our own healing and wholeness.  It’s more art than science though science can provide some insights.

Our Clergy Leader, Jone Johnson Lewis, will reflect on some key questions: What do we need to do to help ourselves become more whole?  To promote wholeness and healing in others?

Our Ethics Matters theme for April is wholeness; the practice of repairing what is broken or wounded, and knowing we are enough.

Sunday platforms begin at 11 am and end at about 12:30, with time for socializing afterward.  Feel free to bring some snacks to share.  On most Sundays, check the calendar for other events starting at 9 or 10 for those who want other ways of experiencing community and growth.

Atheism and the Alt-Right: A Horrible Confluence
Apr 28 @ 11:00 am

The atheist community is often assumed be liberal. But in the past decades, prominent atheist and self-styled “pro-science” writers like Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and the late Christopher Hitchens have embraced views on race, gender, and Islam promulgated by the two overlapping wings of the alt-right, the misogynist “men’s rights movement” and white nationalism. And the alt-right has made a concerted effort to organize atheists, especially men. How can progressive atheists and humanists fight this very disturbing trend?

Five Hundred Million What?
May 5 @ 11:00 am

“Five Hundred Million What?”  In the story of The Little Prince, the prince encounters a businessman who is counting objects: those glittering objects in the sky, counting them in order to own them and get rich selling them.  Speaker: Jone Johnson Lewis.  Music: DuPree, accompanied by Barry Kornhauser.

How often in our lives do we use our curiosity to see beyond the usefulness of objects, of people, of ideas, worried that we’ll lose track of our counting if we stop to enjoy, to question, to be in relationship?

Our Clergy Leader, Jone Johnson Lewis, will reflect on how we might grow our appreciation of others, ourselves, and the world we live in, by seeing beyond just mere usefulness.

Our Ethics Matters theme for May is curiosity: the practice of moving from fear to open-mindedness and open-heartedness.

Sunday platforms begin at 11 am and end at about 12:30, with time for socializing afterward.  Feel free to bring some snacks to share.  On most Sundays, check the calendar for other events starting at 9 or 10 for those who want other ways of experiencing community and growth.

Pandora’s Box
May 19 @ 11:00 am

Curiosity has both a positive and a negative side.  Failure to be curious can lead to a failure of empathy for others, to understanding them as they are and not as we assume they are or should be.  When faced with fear, failure to engage our curiosity can keep us stuck.  Yet curiosity can bring us trouble, as well.  Consider the myth of Pandora, whose curiosity unleashed, according to the story, the evils of the world: sadness, poverty, misery, disease, and death. And there’s the old adage about “curiosity killed the cat.”

Passing on the Patchwork Quilt
Jun 2 @ 11:00 am

This is the last platform address for the Society’s Interim Clergy Leader Jone Johnson Lewis.  She will reflect on the nature of Ethical Culture Leadership, and the community will have an opportunity to say good-bye.  (Jone will be available by phone and email, and in person by mutual agreement, through June 30.  She will be at the AEU Assembly the week of June 23.) Music by DuPree, accompanied by Barry Kornhauser. Annual membership meeting with board elections etc. follows the platform.

A metaphor for the leadership of an Ethical Society is the patchwork quilt. Many before have taken it up and worked on it, then laid it down for others to pick up. In this transition, too, Jone lays down the quilt she has lovingly worked on for these years we’ve spent together, and it will be up to the Society to determine how that work continues into the future.
