Ethics for Children Class
Mar 24 @ 11:01 am – 12:30 pm
Ethics for Children Class @ Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture | New York | United States

Our Ethics for Children program provides a fun, focused learning environment for kids 1 to 12 years old to explore topics that foster empathy, respect and a deeper understanding of self and others. These include: our relationship to the natural world, the diversity of world religions and philosophies, social justice and action, and peaceful problem-solving.

The goal of Ethics for Children is to provide children with skills and knowledge to help them make ethical choices and learn to respect the inherent worth of every human being. We do not impose a fixed set of values or beliefs. Rather, we encourage children to respect and learn about themselves and their environment and to examine how their own ideas and actions impact the greater world.

The program also includes yoga and mindfulness, permaculture and environmental practices, arts, service and volunteering and community building activities.

We focus on 5 major principles:
Care for the Self
Care for the Family
Care for the Community
Care for the Earth
Care for the World

Ethics for Children can also be a full family activity, with classes for all ages and free adult programs at the same time for those who want to attend.

Celebrating Diversity in Unison Concert
Apr 6 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Celebrating Diversity in Unison Concert @ Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture

Come join us for a fundraiser for the accessibility of 53 Prospect Park West for a night of folk music of the common people, with a foundation of gospel, blues and country and a little sprinkle of political and social commentary.
DuPrée’s soaring contralto voice, powerful vibrato and melodious yodeling grip the listener with hope for humanity; her songs evoke the haunting quality of longing for truth and an inquiry into the different shades of justice. Joined by accompanist Barry Kornhauser on guitar and cello.
(ASL interpreted)

DUPREE, a visual/performance artist, has spent most of the past 40 years as an activist, singer and songwriter. Perhaps best known in ‘80s and ‘90s as one of the lead vocalists of the duo band Casselberry DuPree, she has performed at numerous women’s music festivals across the country and in Canada. DuPree’s music is filtered through her African American perspective, which runs the gamut of humanitarian concerns. She is currently expanding by incorporating sounds from the Gullah Islands, where she is researching her family and cultural herstory. DuPree completed her CUNY BA from Medgar Evers & Hunter College and her Master of Fine Arts Degree in Studio Art from City College CUNY. She is an adjunct assistant professor at Medgar Evers College, teaching Introduction to World Art. She is currently an Artist in Residence at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture. DuPree is regularly accompanied by the accomplished musician Barry Kornhauser.

BARRY KORNHAUSER is a longtime friend and neighbor to the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture. He is a composer, arranger, teacher and multi-instrumentalist (cello, guitar, bass guitar and mandola) in a wide variety of musical environments.
He has collaborated with or worked in the ensembles of many progressive musicians including DuPrée, Bev Grant, Suni Paz, Bernardo Palombo, Cutumay Camones, Chris Owens, Jana Herzen, Jay Mankita, Patricia Shih, Jolie Rickman and Colleen Kattau.
