Connecting Through Social Justice - a workshop with Leonie Smith

A nonviolent approach acknowledges a reality that is often not named in social justice spaces—that we are all in the same soup, shaped by white supremacist culture and shaped by dominant systems that fail to nurture belonging for people who have been marginalized. By acknowledging this truth, we can cement a path that firmly moves us towards our unshakeable commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression, and social justice.

Leonie will share this principled approach to social justice, rich in practical ways of engaging across differences while holding care for all.

In these two 90 minute sessions, you will explore:

What is a nonviolent approach to social justice?

How can we hold care for ourselves when being confronted by racism and oppression?

How can we intervene as bystanders in a way that doesn’t heighten shame and blame and surfaces connection?

How can we communicate with clarity and in a way that affirms our commitment to social justice without othering those who are elsewhere in their journey?

The second session on October 4th, will be a coaching session where participants are invited to bring their examples of times when they have wanted to step into allyship and have felt stuck

For more than 30 years Leonie Smith has been working from an anti-racist, anti-oppressive perspective. Her approach is shaped by her own commitment to anti-oppressive practices, her applied knowledge of nonviolent communication, and her people-centered approach for creating group, team, and organizational systems all in service to creating a world that works for all.

Basic Yoga Flow

This class will leave you feeling strong, energized and balanced. Lea will guide you through the basic postures of yoga with clear alignment cues, steady and dynamic movement and a focus on physical and mental balance. This class is intended for students with a basic familiarity with yoga asanas (the physical postures) and an average to good fitness and mobility level. While not intended for complete beginners, if you know what a “downward dog” is, you will be fine! The class is designed for adults however all ages are welcome.

Lea Bender, E-RYT-500, combines twenty-four years of personal yoga practice with a deep knowledge of anatomy and therapeutic techniques to offer private students a fully integrated experience. Lea received her 200-hour RYT certification from Jaya Yoga Center and her 300-hour Advanced RYT certification at Abhaya Yoga, both in Brooklyn. Lea works with all ages, abilities and client goals. Her students leave feeling strong, centered and inspired.
