Dismantling Whiteness – with Jezra Kaye

We can’t change what we can’t name, so in this talk, Jezra will name some of the ways of whiteness and explore how they make us complicit, how whiteness constricts our lives, and what we can do about it.
“Racism is a relationship in which both groups are involved;[1] but white people have been slow to see ourselves in that picture. Shame, guilt, denial, and fear that we might be one of those white folks undercut our ability to be true allies, and, ironically, help to keep racism in place.”

Climate Justice Faces Industry Rezoning: Sunset Park‘s Battle for its Soul

Climate Justice Faces Industry Rezoning: Sunset Park‘s Battle for its Soul

Sunset Park faces the same forces of gentrification too many New Yorkers know with the addition of a huge working waterfront at our harbor. Industry City, a developer’s dream for destination retail, has already demonstrated it is not a destination for the local population. Add to this the inevitable water rising from climate change, the potential for a green and resilient infrastructure is huge. Industry City’s proposed rezoning is being challenged by activists in the neighborhood, proposing instead a Green Resilient Industrial District. UPROSE, one of the oldest, Latinex led environmental justice organizations, has been on the frontline of this struggle. Come hear Elizabeth Yeampierre, Executive Director of UPROSE, discuss the principles of Climate Justice and how this battle for a working waterfront resembles the global fight for community care and resilience planning over the extraction of profits for the few.

Sep 6 @ 11:00 am – 12:30 pm
Essential Workers: What makes some work indispensable?

What makes work essential? Is all work essential on some level? Has the pandemic changed our view of work? How can we support essential workers? The day before Labor Day we will gather for a discussion of these issues.

In a BSEC colloquy, we come together in a virtual circle where each participant has the opportunity to share and to listen deeply to one another. Colloquies include music related to the topic.

Live music will be provided by DuPree and Barry Kornhauser.
