Just War Theory: An Ethical Primer

Is war ever truly ethical? Explore Just War Theory through a modern ethical lens and re-examine the use of force today.

The question of whether war can ever be ethical has been a thorny topic for philosophers and politicians for centuries. Many great thinkers, both secular and religious, have weighed in. Some of their observations have shown staying power, while others are getting threadbare with time and when observed in practice. How human beings use force to protect their rights and the rights of their neighbors remains an urgent ethical quandary, even if “Just War Theory” has become just another rhetorical tool of realpolitik. This talk will introduce the audience to some of the terms and conditions of Just War Theory through an ethical culture lens.

Joseph Farkas has been a Humanist Chaplain and Celebrant for over a decade, completing his Master of Divinity through a Humanistic Buddhist university. Over that same time, he has served in the Army National Guard as a combat medic. Today, he is a Certified Ethical Culture Leader in Training in the Chicago area. When he isn’t furthering his professional work, he enjoys exercise and spending time with his wife and their dog.
