Felix Adler: Founder of Modern Applied Ethics with Terry Smith

In 1988, the editors of the Journal of Humanism and Ethical Religion asked Dr. Marcus Singer to evaluate the impact that Felix Adler, the founder of Ethical Culture, had on American philosophy. His answer was that Adler had no impact on American philosophy. But Singer added, if one asked where he should have had impact, the answer would be applied ethics. In this presentation, I explain what Adler’s position on applied ethics was, and then describe the belated acknowledgment he has received as the founder of applied ethics in the modern sense.

Terry Smith earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1976 and has been a member of the Washington Ethical Society since 1979. He has published articles as well as a book on the philosophy of behavioral psychology. He retired as dean of arts and science from Pennwest Edinboro in 2013 and now lives in Washington, D.C.
