Neighborhood Sheroes! – with Horticulturist Ena K. McPherson

A local woman who created a movement.

I am a Gardener at heart and always will be. My aspiration and focus is to bring to my community the enduring ethic of Horticultural pursuits, how it contributes to our well-being, our health, and the great value it can and does bestow on our environment.

Ena K. McPherson is literally a force of nature; she’s the recipient of a Green Thumb Lifetime Achievement Award from the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, the founder of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn-based community gardens, and a leading advocate for the power of planting.

Ena K. McPherson has spent more than 20 years founding and advocating for community gardens — those urban green oases where community members convene to grow food crops and flowers, and perhaps even raise chickens.

These gardens are about more than just plants and compost. They create dedicated spaces for neighbors to meet and discuss important community issues, to celebrate, to enjoy the outdoors and each other’s company.
