The Role of Music in the Movement for Social Justice (Hybrid)

This program allies BSEC with the Coordinating Committee of the NYC Region of The Poor People Campaign, a National Call for a Moral Revival.

Arelis M. Figueroa, is a passionate musician originally from the Dominican Republic. Growing up, Arelis sang in church choirs, young people’s musical groups, and as a soloist. She learned both piano and guitar during her youth. Arelis has spent over thirty years working with marginalized communities in New York City. She co-founded La Iglesia del Pueblo, a 1001 New Worshiping Community that follows the Freedom Church of the Poor tradition. Arelis holds a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary and recently graduated from the Ministers Training Program sponsored by the Kairos Center. Additionally, she studied Latin American Liberation Theology at the Center of Popular Education-CESEP in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Community Organizing with the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF).
